The lowest energy level of an atom or molecule, corresponding to the most stable configuration of the atoms and electrons.

At the relatively cold temperatures encountered in the atmosphere, most species normally exist in their ground states. Excitation to higher energy levels usually occurs via the absorption of radiation.
