AMS has launched a pilot project to translate our authoritative, peer-reviewed Glossary of Meteorology into Spanish. View our translated entries on this page!

The AMS Glossary of Meteorology is a pivotal resource in the meteorological community, offering over 12,000 scientifically defined terms and serving over half a million users annually. However, language barriers limit access to this essential reference among global non-English-speaking communities, including many Spanish speakers in the United States. Bridging this gap by translating the free, online Glossary could dramatically enhance understanding and safety, ensuring that vital meteorological information is accessible to all.

To create the new Glossary of Meteorology en Español, AMS staff collaborated with volunteers from the AMS Committee of Hispanic and Latinx Advancement (CHALA) and the Scientific and Technological Activities Commission (STAC). We have partnered with Lilt, a machine learning company specializing in large language models, to translate the 50 most viewed English-language glossary terms while we work to secure funding for a translation of the complete Glossary.

La Sociedad Americana de Meteorología (AMS, por sus siglas en inglés) ha puesto en marcha un proyecto piloto para traducir nuestro acreditado, arbitrado Glosario de Meteorología al español. ¡Vea nuestras traducciones en esta página!

El Glosario de Meteorología de la AMS es un recurso fundamental en la comunidad meteorológica, ofreciendo más de 12.000 términos definidos científicamente y sirviendo a más de medio millón de usuarios anualmente. Sin embargo, las barreras lingüísticas limitan el acceso a esta referencia esencial entre las comunidades globales que no hablan inglés, incluyendo a muchos hispanohablantes en los Estados Unidos. La traducción de este Glosario, que es gratuito y está disponible en línea, podría mejorar drásticamente la comprensión y la seguridad, garantizando que la información meteorológica vital sea accesible para todos.

Nos hemos asociado con Lilt, una empresa de aprendizaje automático especializada en grandes modelos lingüísticos, para traducir los 50 términos más vistos del glosario en inglés mientras trabajamos para conseguir financiación para una traducción del Glosario completo.
