buoyancy velocity

From Glossary of Meteorology
A vertical velocity scale wB for convective boundary layers, that is related to the buoyant driving force for convection and the depth zi of the mixed layer:

where g is gravitational acceleration, TvML and θvML are the average absolute virtual temperature and average virtual potential temperature in the mixed layer, respectively, and θvSfc is the virtual potential temperature of the surface skin. It is related to the Deardorff velocity, w*, by wB ≈ 13w*.
