flash freeze

From Glossary of Meteorology

Rapid reduction of air temperature from above freezing to below freezing within a few hours, which causes snow, slush, meltwater, or rain to freeze and form ice. The severity of the flash freeze increases with both the magnitude and the rate of the temperature drop.
