Abbreviation for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite.
NOAA operates two GOES that monitor atmospheric, terrestrial, marine, and space weather. These satellites are placed into geostationary orbit above the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The first GOES (GOES-A) was launched in 1975.
