Any of a general class of linear and nonlinear scalar and vector partial differential equations in time and space.

An example of a wave equation is the linear scalar equation

where v is the phase speed. An example of a nonlinear wave equation is the Korteweg–deVries equation

Electromagnetic waves are governed by a set of vector wave equations.
